Best Chinese restaurant London

Food / 24 March, 2026 / Ellie Thompson

A standout among the best Chinese restaurants in London

If you’re looking to shake up your usual dinner plans, Fiery Flavours in Southwark is one of those places that feels like a proper discovery. Just a short hop from Surrey Quays, this buzzing spot has quickly built a reputation as one of the best Chinese restaurants in London, and after one visit, it’s easy to see why.

This isn’t your typical Friday night takeaway experience. Fiery Flavours leans into bold, unapologetic Hunan cooking, with dishes that are rich, spicy and full of personality. It’s the kind of place that makes for a brilliant date night if you’re both up for trying something a little different.

What to order at one of the best Chinese restaurants in London

We definitely over-ordered, but that’s part of the fun here. The menu is so tempting it’s hard to hold back, and dishes are generous, so a little really does go a long way.

There’s a real sense of adventure to what’s on offer, from frog’s legs and chicken feet to the infamous stinky tofu (which, fair warning, is not for the faint-hearted and very much an acquired taste).

That said, not everything is about pushing boundaries. Some of the standout dishes were simply exceptional. The dim sum was spot on, the cabbage noodles were genuinely addictive, and the beef and chicken dishes were some of the best we’ve had in London. Deeply flavourful, perfectly cooked and packed with heat, but never overwhelming.

Bold spice and standout Hunan flavours

And then there’s the spice. Expect chillies, and lots of them, woven through many of the dishes in a way that feels warming rather than punishing. It’s bold, but balanced, which is exactly what you want from this style of cooking.

One of the nicest touches during the evening was how the staff took the time to talk us through Hunan cuisine and the region itself. Hunan, in south-central China, is known for its lush mountains, rice fields and hot, humid climate, and the food reflects that environment.

They explained how Hunan cooking is all about bold, layered flavour rather than just heat, with fresh chillies, garlic and smoked ingredients creating dishes that are vibrant, punchy and deeply satisfying. Unlike some other Chinese cuisines that lean towards sweetness or richness, Hunan food is sharper, more intense and designed to really wake up your palate. It added a whole extra layer to the meal, understanding where these flavours come from, made everything feel even more special.

One of the big talking points right now is their seasonal Sole Pot (£38), a generous sharing dish inspired by Hunan street food, featuring crayfish, aged tofu, frog’s legs and chicken feet simmered in a fragrant, spicy sauce. It’s designed to be shared and perfect if you’re feeling brave.

Service that sets Fiery Flavours apart

What really sets Fiery Flavours apart among the best Chinese restaurants in London is its service. The man running the restaurant couldn’t have been more welcoming, guiding us through the menu and clearly passionate about the food.

We also met a local regular, Julien, just 21, who comes in for dinner frequently and even brings his own truffle oil. The kitchen happily cooks his prawns exactly how he likes them. That kind of personal touch says everything about the place. It’s relaxed, generous and genuinely focused on making people happy.

Atmosphere and overall experience

The atmosphere adds to the experience. It’s lively, a little chaotic in the best possible way, and feels completely authentic rather than overly polished. This is somewhere you come to eat well, try something new and have a bit of fun with it.

Book now

Fiery Flavours isn’t trying to be safe, and that’s exactly why it works. If you’re after a predictable meal, this probably isn’t it. But if you’re looking for a memorable, flavour-packed night out, it more than delivers. If you’re searching for the best Chinese restaurant in London for a date night with a difference, this should be firmly on your list.

We loved it.
