From TikTok skincare hauls to bathroom shelves packed with adult products, kids are getting interested in skincare like never before. FUNNY SKIN wants to take things back to basics with a simple, age-appropriate skincare routine created specifically for 8 to 16-year-olds.
If your tween or teen has suddenly developed a skincare routine more complicated than your own, you’re not alone.
Skincare has become big business among tweens and teens, with social media serving up endless routines, trending ingredients and beautifully packaged products. The problem? Much of what they’re seeing was never designed with young skin in mind.
Enter FUNNY SKIN, a new skincare range created specifically for children and teenagers aged 8 to 16.
Developed by skincare specialist Ashley Wady, founder of BOSSFACE, FUNNY SKIN is deliberately doing things differently. Rather than introducing children to complicated routines and powerful active ingredients, the focus is on the basics: cleansing, hydration, supporting the skin barrier and protecting skin from the sun.
In other words, a sensible first skincare routine without turning your 10-year-old’s bathroom into a beauty counter.
Does My Tween Actually Need A Skincare Routine?
Probably not the 12-step one they’ve seen online.
But as children get older, introducing a few simple skincare habits can make sense. Increased independence, sport, sweat and the changes that come with puberty can all make children more conscious of their skin.
The important bit is keeping things age-appropriate.
FUNNY SKIN has been formulated for young, growing skin, which can be more sensitive than adult skin. The formulas are hypoallergenic and made without fragrance, alcohol, artificial colours, parabens, soap-based ingredients or hormones.
Its development also involved collaboration with paediatric specialists, alongside human efficacy assessments and safety and risk substance testing.
What Should A First Skincare Routine Look Like?
Here’s the refreshing part: it really doesn’t need to be complicated.
FUNNY SKIN divides its eight-product collection into four everyday essentials and four optional extras.
The core routine consists of a face wash, serum, moisturiser and SPF50, giving tweens and teens an easy introduction to looking after their skin without piling on unnecessary products.
The optional additions include micellar water, toner and two face masks.
For parents faced with a child asking for every product they’ve spotted online, there’s something rather reassuring about the message here: skincare doesn’t need to mean more skincare.
Gentle Ingredients For Young Skin
Instead of headline-grabbing adult actives, FUNNY SKIN uses ingredients including trehalose, squalene and vitamin B5, selected to hydrate and soothe while supporting the skin barrier.
The idea isn’t to “fix” perfectly normal young skin or chase an impossible complexion. It’s about keeping skin clean, comfortable, hydrated and protected.
And perhaps more importantly, it’s an opportunity to teach children that good skincare is about looking after the skin they have, rather than finding flaws to correct.
Skincare Without The Beauty Pressure
This might be our favourite part of the concept. There’s nothing wrong with tweens finding skincare fun. In fact, encouraging children to wash their face properly and wear SPF is hardly a bad habit to take into adulthood.
Where things become trickier is when skincare starts to feel like another area in which children are being encouraged to scrutinise their appearance or copy routines created for adults.
FUNNY SKIN’s approach is intentionally simpler.
“Young people are becoming interested in skincare earlier than ever, but much of the information reaching them is designed for adult skin,” explains founder Ashley Wady.
She says the aim is to teach healthy habits and give families an age-appropriate alternative rather than encouraging complicated routines or unnecessary active ingredients.
A Good First Skincare Routine For Tweens And Teens?
For children who are beginning to show an interest in skincare, FUNNY SKIN offers parents an interesting middle ground: you’re not shutting down something they’re excited about, but you’re also not handing over your grown-up skincare cupboard.
Start simple. Keep it gentle. Make daily SPF normal. There will be plenty of time for the rest.
FUNNY SKIN is suitable for children and teenagers aged 8–16, with products priced from £6.
